What is Minecraft Map Art?
Everything you need to know about creating map art in Minecraft survival and creative modes.
What is Map Art?
In Minecraft, when you create a map item, it records the terrain of the world. Map Art (or Map Pixel Art) is the technique of artificially modifying the terrain—placing specific blocks in a flat area—so that when you create a map of that area, it displays a custom image.
Players use this technique to bring photos, memes, QR codes, or custom artwork into their survival worlds.
How it works
A standard Minecraft map covers an area of 128x128 blocks. This means to create one map's worth of art, you need to place 16,384 blocks!
Different blocks represent different colors on the map. For example:
- Grass Block appears as green.
- Cobblestone appears as gray.
- Snow Block appears as white.
Why use a tool?
Manually figuring out which block corresponds to which pixel of your image is impossible. That's where Minecraft Image Converter comes in.
- Dithering: It converts your millions-of-colors photo into the limited palette of Minecraft blocks.
- Schematic/Command Generation: It tells you exactly where to place each block, or generates commands to build it instantly.
- 3D Preview: It lets you see how the map will look before you place a single block.
